We are in those months were the heat and humidity can start to feel oppressive. It makes everything move a little bit slower and everyone feels sluggish, meaning that it’s much harder to get up and get things done. Now, school may not be in session, but there is always something more to do. Whether you have taken on a project, are starting a business, working for a company, or just looking to get something done, the heat can create a barrier. Here’s some tips on how to keep the motivation while simultaneously sweating to death.
For starters, try to get work done either early in the morning or late at night, depending on when you work best. The middle of the day and the afternoon is the warmest time of day and usually when you will find it most difficult to get yourself up and going. By doing things in the morning, you find that you are able to get everything out of the way in order to enjoy the rest of your summer day during things that are more entertaining. Night time can also work if you aren’t worried about time restraints and know that you will be awake enough to sit down and get a bunch of work done.
Have something cool nearby that you can distract yourself with when the heat starts to get restrictive. This can be something like a glass of water, fan, or even an ice pack if you are really struggling. It’s hard to think when you are overheating so having an item you can grab quickly is a big help. This could also be working by a pool, if you are lucky enough to have access to one.
Get outside and enjoy the weather. This could be taking the time to sit and read a book in the sun or going for walks. By doing this, you get yourself moving and can maintain some sort of routine during the summer months when not as much may be going on. It also allows time for some fresh air, which can be hard to get when you have a lot on your plate. This doesn’t have to be an extended period of time, especially if it is really hot, but it will get you outside for some time instead of hiding away from the sun.
As always, make a list and keep yourself on target. Summer tends to be filled with a lot more activities and fun than other times of the year (mostly the carry over of our childhood beliefs), but that doesn’t mean that we can neglect the other things we need to get done. Make sure you have everything you need to complete written down, but make sure it’s reasonable. For things such as learning or working on a business can be easier to plan during the summer heat, especially if you can work outside, but workouts may be more difficult. Don’t overexert yourself during the heat, which may mean finding new ways to complete your tasks.
Last but not least, manage your distractions. People have more time during the summer and plan more events, so be sure to keep yourself focused during designated times so you don’t have to worry about not meeting your goals. There will always be time to talk to your friends and it’s better to get the work done before going to that party. Set your phone aside and get it done, then you can enjoy the season.
Summer is the time for fun and friends, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t still work to be done. Take care of yourself during the heat and take the steps to keep yourself on track. The heat can be a lot at times and make you want to curl into a ball, but you’ve got this.
